ASCLEPIADE lived during the 1st century BC and his medical reputation was immense in Rome and on a level with Hippocrates.
Having left a more discreet mark upon history , ASCLEPIADE was, however, famous at least for two reasons :
- he was the first person to prescribe wine for the treatment of various illnesses, leading to the Treaty concerning the Prescription of Wine, which was completed by his follower and disciple, Pliny ;
- he organised the first classification of wines of quality for : Caecuban wine, Faustinian wine, Alban wine.
